The
purpose of the Firefighter's Emerald Society is
- to
provide a fraternal organization for the firefighters of
Metropolitan Atlanta who share a Gaelic heritage
- provide
support to sick or injured members of the fire service,
and their families, with special attention to line of
duty injuries and deaths
- to
celebrate our heritage through social events and musical
contributions.
FESMA
provides an environment that fosters a spirit of brotherhood
and fellowship amongst its members and the members of the Metro Atlanta Police Emerald
Society.
FESMA
is also dedicated to assisting needy families in the event
of hardship.
FESMA encourages our members to set a
positive example by participating in the special activities
of their respective departments. Furthermore, our
organization is committed to enhancing professionalism
within the fire service establishment and developing an
atmosphere in which the fire service and community work
together to increase public safety. We are making efforts to
form a Gaelic Honor Guard and a Pipe and Drum band.
The first Emerald
Society was established in 1953 in New York City. The primary Goal
at the time was to inculcate and preserve in its members the
heritage of their Gaelic culture. Since that time, numerous Emerald
Societies have been established nationwide. Membership within these
various Emerald Societies now exceeds 25,000 members. In
addition to promoting a sense of pride in our Gaelic heritage,
FESMA
was established to recognize the accomplishment and contributions
made by fellow Gaelic fire service members within the Metro Atlanta
Area. However, Irish heritage is not required for membership.
Several types of membership are available.
